SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) -- A paramilitary trooper was killed in a militant attack on their camp in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, officials said Monday.

The militants attacked the paramilitary camp at Midoora area of Tral in Pulwama district, about 46 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"Late last evening militants fired upon a paramilitary camp here, which was duly retaliated. In the ensuing gunfight a paramilitary trooper was wounded," a police official posted in Pulwama told Xinhua. "The wounded trooper later on succumbed to his wounds in hospital."

Reports said militants managed to escape from the spot in darkness following the attack.

Meanwhile the death toll of civilians in the blast that went off near gunfight site on Sunday in Kulgam district has risen to seven early Monday.

Violence in the region on Sunday claimed 16 lives across the region including three troopers and seven civilians.

A guerrilla war is going on between militants and Indian troops stationed in Indian-controlled Kashmir since 1989. The gunfight between the two sides takes place intermittently across the region.
