NEW JERSEY, United States, June 8 (Xinhua) -- Midfielder Bruno Guimaraes said Monday Brazil deserves to be considered among the favorites to win the FIFA World Cup, which starts this week in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

The Newcastle United captain said he disagreed with claims from Brazil's media that the team lacks the strength of previous World Cups as it seeks to win the competition for a record sixth time.

"A lot of people say things just to get attention," Bruno said.

"Brazil is one of the favorites in any competition. No other team has five stars on its shirt. We have great players shining at the biggest clubs in the world, so our national team and our players deserve proper respect."

Despite a 24-year World Cup title drought, Brazil remains the most successful team in the competition's 96-year history with five winner's trophies, ahead of Germany and Italy, which have won four each.

Bruno cautioned against discounting the South American team.

"Anything can happen on the field. Being a favorite doesn't mean you'll win, but we're right up there among the contenders," he said.

Bruno also commented on Brazil's likely tactical formation for its opening Group C match against Morocco on Saturday.

Manager Carlo Ancelotti previously favored a 4-2-4 shape, but his decision to replace injured full-back Wesley with midfielder Ederson on Sunday has prompted suggestions he will favor 4-3-3 during the World Cup.

"A 4-2-4 gives you more options in attack, but at the same time the team becomes more direct," Bruno said.

Brazil will begin its World Cup campaign against Morocco in New Jersey before facing Haiti and Scotland in the group.
