CAIRO, June 27 (Xinhua) -- Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Aboul-Gheit urged on Wednesday all Libyan parties to resume the political track to reach a national reconciliation.

In a released statement, Aboul-Gheit said the Libyans should work to hold presidential and legislative elections and unify the country's institutions.

The chief reiterated the pan-Arab organization's commitment to supporting the Libyan parties in their confidence-building efforts within the framework of the political process that was initiated by the United Nations.

He also underlined the necessity of preserving the economic infrastructure and oil facilities of Libya as well as steering them away from the political dispute.

Despite signing a UN-sponsored peace agreement by the Libyan political parties in 2015, Libya remains politically divided between eastern and western governments, both competing for legitimacy.
